After months of anticipation, we finally went to The Ringling to see the new Greatest Show On Earth® Gallery, which opened in April. Stepping into this unique exhibit, a celebration of the modern circus era that traces its origins to Irvin Feld's acquisition of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® in 1967, was like a journey back in time. As a child, the circus always held a special place in my heart, and this modern tribute was an opportunity I couldn't resist. The memories of the circus, the laughter, and the awe flooded back as I explored this living history. And, of course, its history in Sarasota makes it even more special.
The gallery entrance is nothing short of spectacular. An arched gateway crowned by a brightly lit Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® sign immediately transported me into the circus world. Feld Entertainment Inc. generously donated this iconic marquee, which traveled nationwide with the touring show.
Upon entering, we were greeted by the exhibit's first section, which delves into the history of the Feld family and their transformation of the circus business. Feld Entertainment Inc., a leading producer of live family entertainment, played a pivotal role in the circus industry. Here, we encountered fascinating artifacts such as the original contract of Irvin Feld's acquisition of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® and the first-ever circus poster designed by the Felds. These artifacts tell how the Felds revolutionized the circus industry, making it the global phenomenon it is today.
Our exploration of the gallery led us to an interactive media space, a hub of over 120 circus acts. This section wasn't just a display but an invitation to enter the circus world. It offered a unique behind-the-scenes perspective, revealing the intricate planning and hard work that brought each season's show to life. Unlike anything I've seen before, the interactive displays allowed us not just to witness but to be a part of the creation of the circus's magic, engaging us in a way that was both educational and entertaining.
The final section of the gallery was a breathtaking mixture of multimedia and three-dimensional presentations. It was a sensory feast that vividly conveyed the thrill and spectacle of circus performances. We were immersed in high-definition videos, surrounded by sound effects, and stood in awe of life-sized replicas of circus performers. The vibrant visuals and dynamic displays made us feel like we were part of the audience, experiencing the awe and wonder of a live show.
Leaving the gallery, we were filled with a deep appreciation for the circus's rich history and its vibrant future. With Feld Entertainment Inc. preparing to relaunch Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® across the U.S. in 2024, the significance of this exhibit is not just historical but also forward-looking. The Greatest Show On Earth® Gallery is a testament to a legacy that continues to captivate audiences worldwide and promises the magic yet to come. If you're in Sarasota this Summer or heading back in the Fall, this exhibit is a must-visit, offering an immersive journey into the magic and history of the circus.
