Contemplating Vermeer at Sarasota Art Museum: Now Through April 13
A fantastic "Contemplating Vermeer" exhibit is currently on display at the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College. This captivating exhibition showcasing contemporary artist Joe Fig's work will run through April 13.
In 2023, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam held a landmark exhibition featuring 28 of the 35 known works by the Dutch master Johannes Vermeer. Inspired by this significant event, Joe Fig created "Contemplating Vermeer," a series of 16 new oil paintings. These works pay tribute to Vermeer's artistic mastery while exploring the modern experience of viewing art in public spaces.
Building on his decade-long "Contemplation" series, Fig examines the dynamic relationship between viewers, artworks, and their surroundings. His carefully crafted compositions blend photography, digital reimagining, and oil painting to depict intimate moments of engagement with art. Each piece reflects Fig's fascination with how people connect with and contemplate masterpieces, inviting viewers to reflect on their roles as spectators.
