A Journey Through History and Horticulture in Sarasota's Italian-Inspired Oasis.
Mable Ringling, a woman of immense passion for horticulture and the wife of John Ringling, dedicated herself to crafting a unique Italian-inspired garden at the 66-acre Ringling estate on Sarasota Bay. Among the estate's several gardens, the Rose Garden stands out. A labor of love completed in 1913, it is a 27,225 garden in a circular layout modeled after a wagon wheel. The pathways are adorned with garden sculptures of courting couples in pastoral scenes, creating a romantic ambiance. The Rose Garden, located [near the estate's main entrance], is renowned for its aromatic charm, making it a must-visit spot on the Ringling estate.
The original Rose Garden, a testament to the horticultural legacy of Mable Ringling, is a living history book. It houses a treasure trove of roses introduced between 1867 and 2002, each with a unique story that adds to the garden's rich tapestry. Despite facing challenges during the 1930s and 40s, the garden has been meticulously restored to its former glory, standing as a horticultural marvel today. Many of the 1,200 roses currently thriving in the garden are the same varieties Mable planted, including hybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras, and old garden roses. Some of these roses bear famous names, such as Dolly Parton, Frida Kahlo, and Mrs. Ringling, adding to the garden's historical allure.
We recently visited the garden, a serene spot she called her sanctuary. It's where she shared its beauty, creating a sense of appreciation. The garden retains Mable's charm with an informal atmosphere. The butterfly and palm garden is a bustling hub of diverse plants, offering a unique opportunity to witness the life cycle of butterflies and explore Sarasota's flora and fauna. If you can take a Guided tour, a gateway to a deeper understanding of the garden's history and horticultural significance, is available {every hour from 10 AM to 4 PM].
1927, Mable Ringling founded the Sarasota Garden Club and Founders Circle, marking a significant milestone in the garden's history. The Secret Garden, a cherished part of the estate, underwent a complete restoration in 2003, with further revitalization in 2016. The Sarasota Garden Club, Butterfly Club, and dedicated Sarasota Garden Club members played a pivotal role in these restoration efforts, underscoring the community's commitment to preserving the garden's beauty. Their shared responsibility and love for the garden is palpable, making it a truly special place.
The best time to visit the garden is April when the roses bloom. The air is filled with the sweet scent of roses, and the vibrant colors of the flowers create a picturesque scene. It's a time when the garden truly comes alive, offering a unique and unforgettable experience.
If you are not a member of The Ringling, the good news is that it is free to visit on Mondays. On the property, you can also visit the Ca' d'Zan, the art and the circus museums, sculptures, and other gardens on this beautiful Bayfront.
