Snook Haven Enters a New Era: Honoring the Past, Building for the Future

On May 8, Sarasota County began constructing an $8.75 million revitalization project for Snook Haven Park, a cherished destination along the Myakka River. We visited the park on its final weekend before construction started and enjoyed a delicious slice of authentic Old Florida.

The project marks an exciting new chapter for the park, a beloved community favorite. The original sit-down restaurant, established in 1958, will be replaced with a new food concession building and a covered seating area positioned further inland to improve resilience against flooding. The severe flooding caused by Hurricane Ian in 2022 highlighted the need for this redesign.

The updated park will preserve the natural tree canopy while offering an authentic Old Florida experience. Although modernized, the design will continue to reflect the area's historic charm.

Once completed, expanded amenities include canoe rentals, additional fishing spots, and easy access to the Camp Venice campground. A new bandshell will commemorate the Gulf Coast Banjo Society, which has been providing music to the park since 1988.

With its rich history, the park aims to enhance the community's recreational offerings while respecting its past.
