Avondale: Sarasota's Charming Blend of History and Modern Living

Welcome to Avondale, one of Sarasota's most beloved and architecturally distinctive neighborhoods, where history meets contemporary life. With fewer than 200 homes nestled along tree-lined streets and the tranquil curves of Hudson Bayou, Avondale offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of Sarasota's legacy while enjoying all the conveniences of modern living.

Historic Beauty, Modern Comfort

i

Avondale features a diverse range of homes, including charming 1920s bungalows, Mediterranean Revival estates, and custom-built residences. Whether you're seeking a restored vintage home or a newly designed property, Avondale has something for everyone.

Originally platted in 1914, the area was recorded as the Avondale Heights Subdivision in 1915. To promote development, a modern bungalow valued at $1,500 was offered. Later, Avondale underwent re-platting, with lots being enlarged and one street removed. Plans for the neighborhood included a boat dock, seawall, and street trees, creating a "model development."

In 1923, the neighborhood was officially developed as a platted subdivision known as Avondale. Its boundaries are U.S. 41, Osprey Avenue, Bahia Vista Street, and Lincoln Drive. Ionic urns were placed at the entry corners, and two original pedestals with seating remain at the intersection of Yale Avenue and Bahia Vista Street. Additionally, near the corner of Lincoln Drive and Brewer Place, you can find the only remaining concrete street marker, which serves as a reminder of the time when U.S. 41 was just a dirt road.

A standout feature of the neighborhood is the historic home at 1903 Lincoln Drive, designed by renowned architect Thomas Reed Martin, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Over the years, Avondale has preserved its charming 1920s homes, which blend seamlessly with newer, modern structures. These contemporary homes achieve a balance between energy efficiency and the neighborhood's timeless style.

Today, streets like Pomelo Avenue, Alta Vista Street, and Datura Street are home to luxurious residences with high ceilings, modern designs, and exquisite interiors. These properties retain the character of the neighborhood while incorporating modern upgrades, including chef's kitchens, spa-like primary suites, smart home technology, and inviting outdoor living spaces.
